A next-level class for students ages 12-15 who have mastered the basics of sewing and would like to advance their skills Saturday, April 2 from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Ages: 12 to 15 Skill level: Intermediate Prerequisite skills: Mastery of home sewing machine, confidence in garment construction, understanding of pattern identification and symbols, comfort following a commercial pattern, strong understanding of seam allowances and measurements, ability to cut accurately Do you have a project you have been working on but need assistance? Do you have alterations you’d like to make to your clothing? Are you ready to use an industrial sewing machine for a professional finish? This class will offer students who are confident in the basics of sewing and following a pattern the opportunity to develop their sewing skills to a higher level. Potential topics include: putting in collars and different types of zippers; lining garments such as jackets, dresses, and suits; tailoring and alterations basics; and gaining experience with advanced fabric types such as silk, suede, and more. The session will include demonstrations of specific sewing techniques such as the above, which students will then have the opportunity to apply to an existing project. Note: if you are interested in a specific sewing skill or technique, please email us at [email protected], and we will make every effort to include it in the lesson if possible. Plan on bringing a project that you have already started to work on during this class. Only 5 places! Students will work on Janome HD-3000 and School Mate 7330 straight-stitch home sewing machines and Janome and Babylock home sergers. Students with advanced skills may be moved to industrial sewing machines. Basic sewing kit and materials for projects is required; a shopping list will be provided for students to purchase supplies ahead of class, and students should bring any materials necessary for specific projects they would like to work on. Please note, a guardian will need to come into the Academy at the beginning of class to review and sign the following required forms: Participant Agreement, Drop-off Consent, and Emergency Contact forms. The Photo Consent form is not required, but is greatly appreciated. Masks will be required for the duration of class. Vision: Rightfully Sewn will lay a path to a contemporary version of Kansas City’s 20th-century golden era of garment design and manufacturing.  Mission: Rightfully Sewn will provide seamstress training for at-risk women so they can thrive in a specialized workforce that will reestablish Kansas City as an epicenter of garment manufacturing, while at the same time, propel Kansas City fashion designers to market so they can supply the burgeoning demand for affordable, high-quality, American-produced garments.
