Description

Volunteer to assist The Nature Conservancy's Disney Wilderness Preserve stewardship staff in protecting red-cockaded woodpecker habitat. Help is needed to clear vegetation around trees with red-cockaded woodpecker nest cavities to help protect the nests during the upcoming prescribed fire season (intense heat from palmetto fires can damage the nest cavities). Volunteers will be led by stewardship staff to use brush cutters, loppers, rakes and other equipment to cut the vegetation and move it away from the trees. This is a tough physical job! We will be required to follow COVID-19 protocol, including keeping the group small and socially distancing. Volunteers must be over 18 years old, must register to participate, bring their own water, snacks, bug and sun protection, and meet at the welcome center at 8:30am. Please also consider brining eye protection (or sunglasses) and work gloves. All other equipment will be provided by The Nature Conservancy. The group will likely be transported in large open air vehicles to access the volunteer location. Boarding and disembarking the vehicles requires large steps up and down and the off-road drive can be very bumpy.
