NEW YORK CITY — Eric Adams' brother got the go-ahead to head mayoral security, albeit at a substantial pay cut from the six-figure salary that stoked accusations of nepotism.
Bernard Adams will be paid a $1 salary — a figure first reported by Gothamist.
The effectively unpaid position was approved by the city's Conflicts of Interest Board this week after a controversy that Eric Adams aimed to hire his brother.
A board letter first obtained and published by Gothamist makes clear their approval stemmed in part from the fact it would be unpaid.
"Bernard Adams would receive the nominal amount of $1 per year to enable him to become a City employee," it states. "Bernard Adams would be required to file an annual disclosure report with the Board and would be subject to the same integrity safeguards as other public servants."
Eric Adams originally sought to make his brother a deputy NYPD commissioner, a position that draws a $240,000-a-year salary. Under pressure, he effectively demoted his brother to head of mayoral security, which would still bring $210,000 a year.
In response to critics, Adams said he wanted somebody he could trust to head his security.
He also said he'd abide by the conflicts board's decision.
