RIDGEFIELD, CT — First Selectman Rudy Marconi is urging residents to "plan for the worst, and hope for the best," as a major snowstorm barrels up the coast with Connecticut in its sights. Mass transit services have already declared they will have limited or no service on Saturday. MetroNorth will run limited service, buses will be shut down and AMTRAK will suspend service following the last train Friday night. Parts of the state could see as much as 18 inches of snow, but the National Weather Service is predicting 5-11 inches locally. The Ridgefield Office of Emergency Management has advised residents to eliminate any potential hazards outside their homes, and store enough supplies to be self-sufficient for up to two weeks. These should include: One gallon of water per person per day.Non-perishable food, including a manual can opener.Refilled prescriptions and updated first aid kit.Digital and hard copies of important documents like health/vaccination records.Water, food, prescriptions, and vaccination records for all pets.Fully charged electronics with portable battery backup chargers, if possible.Extra batteries sized to fit portable radios, flashlights and lanterns.Wood for fireplace or wood stove stored in a safe and accessible place.Full gasoline cans and/or propane tanks.Generator, if possible (follow manufacturer's safety and ventilation recommendations).Cash for emergencies. OEM also suggests residents prepare an emergency "go-bag," which should contain a flashlight, batteries, first aid kit, face masks, gloves, hand sanitizer, prescription medications, toilet paper, pet items and cash. Cars should be loaded with a full tank of gas, along with blankets, shovel, local map, ice scraper, and sand/litter/ice melt. Residents may sign up for OEM alerts online here.
