Here are the top stories today in Colorado Springs: Former airman and Colorado Springs war hero announces his bid for Colorado House of Representatives. Retired Master Sgt. Israel Del Toro has decided to run for office in pursuit of something that is close to his heart: better support for fellow veterans and people with disabilities. Del Toro himself suffered catastrophic injuries to his body during a 2005 deployment to Afghanistan and decided to reenlist afterwards despite his 100% disability status. (KKTV 11 News) The Hotel ElegantΓ© hotel in Colorado Springs is set to be converted into affordable housing. The 496-room hotel is among the largest in Colorado, and will soon affordable housing for entry-level workers adding a significant number of apartment units to Colorado Springs. (Mile High CRE) Colorado Springs students at Doherty High School in District 11 go remote temporarily due to a staff shortage. As COVID continues to spread, the already understaffed high school has been forced to go fully online this week as teachers and personnel deal with the sickness. Administrators at the school's concerns and frustrations reflect the current nationwide shortage of teachers.
