2 Men Charged In New Brunswick Shooting Of Teen Boy

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Two men have been charged with the non-fatal shooting of a teenage boy in New Brunswick earlier this January. The teen boy was shot just past 7:00 p.m. Jan. 20 in the area of Throop Avenue and Redmond Street. Police found the teen boy with a gunshot wound; he was taken to a nearby hospital and survived. Police say Corey Fuqua, 19, of North Brunswick and Gede Maccelus, 20, of Princeton participated in the shooting. On Tuesday of this week, Fuqua and Maccelus were taken into custody and each charged with first-degree attempted murder and second-degree unlawful possession of a handgun. Where are these illegal guns coming from in New Jersey? This same week, the U.S. Justice Department revealed that in July of 2021 it launched five cross-jurisdictional strike forces. These "strike forces" had the goal of disrupting the sale of illegal guns trafficking in key regions across the country. The strike forces identified five key market regions where they said the illegal gun trade is strong: New York/New Jersey, Chicago, Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area/Sacramento Region and Washington, D.C. According to gun trace data, a significant number of illegal guns recovered in the New York/northern New Jersey area originate from outside the area. Many of the guns are smuggled up from Florida.
