Looking for a cat

We had 2 cats. Our oldest one passed away in December. Where is a good place to get a cat with no “rehomeing fee” or adoption fee ? I just feel every time we inquire about a cat it feels like a scam. I don’t mind giving a donation but I think a $300 adoption fee and have to fill out a way to personal application is a little excessive.
