MARLBOROUGH, MA — With up to 12 inches of snow possible in Marlborough this weekend, there's never been a better time to go outside. That's because the Marlborough Recreation Department has a new snowshoe rental program happening this winter. Any city resident can reserve a pair of snowshoes and matching poles during weekdays and weekends — and it's free. Snowshoes provide buoyancy for bipeds traveling across deep snow. Instead of sinking, the shoes distribute your weight across a wider area, allowing you to walk more easily across the white stuff. There are plenty of trails to explore in snowshoes across Marlborough, from Callahan State Park to the Old Farm trail. The Trustees of the Reservations also has suggestions for places outside the city. To learn more about recreation programs and reserve a pair of snowshoes, visit the parks and rec website.
