HAMDEN, CT — A two-alarm fire displaced 10 residents from a five-family apartment complex in Hamden on Wednesday afternoon, according to officials.
Crews responded to the apartment complex at 6 Savoy Street within three minutes of dispatch to a reported structure fire, according to Fire Marshal Brian Dolan.
The first units arrived at 12:13 p.m. and reported heavy fire coming from the windows and front door of one of the units, Dolan said.
"All five units were immediately searched for occupants," Dolan wrote in a news release. "A resident of one unit was still inside and was safely evacuated. An aggressive fire attack was started and the fire was escalated to a two-alarm fire."
The North Haven Fire Department provided assistance at the scene.
Dolan said the fire spread rapidly due to wind conditions and an open front door. The fire was declared under control at 1:22 p.m.
"The fire was contained to the one unit and the attic space above," Dolan said. "There were no injuries to civilians or firefighters."
The fire marshal's office determined that the fire started in a toaster oven.
"The fire spread to a table cloth and soon engulfed the dining room and kitchen," Dolan said. "It spread to the upstairs bedrooms and attic. The other units in the building suffered varying degrees of smoke and water damage. The building was declared uninhabitable by the Building Official."
Hamden Community Services and The American Red Cross have provided accommodations and assistance to the displaced residents, according to Dolan.
