POINT PLEASANT BEACH, NJ — A brush fire on Gull Island in the Manasquan River shut down traffic on Channel Drive on Wednesday afternoon, Point Pleasant Beach police said.
Ocean Fire Company said crews from its company and Point Pleasant Beach Fire Company 2 were the first to respond and tried to extinguish the fire from the mainland, but they could not access the fire adequately, officials said.
Assistance and fire boats were requested, and Manasquan Hook & Ladder Company #1 , Volunteer Engine Co. #2 of Manasquan, Point Pleasant Fire Department Station 75, Tow Boat USA, and the U.S. Coast Guard provided help to get crews and equipment to the island.
The fire company said it took about three hours to extinguish fire and clean up the scene.
Helicopters also assisted, Point Pleasant Beach police said.
"We would to say thank you to all our mutual aid for helping on scene today, Brielle Fire Department for providing town coverage, and Point Lobster Company for providing food/ refreshements to all manpower on scene," Ocean Fire Company said.
You can see video of the fire on the Jersey Shore Fire Response YouTube page.
