Here are the top three stories today in Providence: The Rhode Island Foundation has awarded $500,000 in grants to animal welfare programs across the state. Funding will go towards things such as low-cost vet care for pets of low-income households, and preparing animals for adoption or wildlife rehabilitation. Various recipients will receive money, with the Potter League for Animals receiving the largest amount totaling $100,000. (WLNE-TV (ABC6))Providence was named the 5th best city in the U.S. for coffee-lovers, according to a new study. The study conducted by Clever, a real estate data company, showed that Providence earned its ranking due to the average price of coffee and amount of coffee shops per resident, compared to the national average. Currently, Providence has roughly 23 coffee shops per 1,000 residents — the national average is 13 coffee shops per 100,000 residents. (GoLocalProv)A Providence man is being held without bail in connection with a deadly Pawtucket double-shooting which took the life of one man. 29-year-old Trequan Baker was charged on Thursday with first-degree murder in a double shooting that claimed the life of 36-year-old Qudus Kafo and injured 37-year-old Bruno Vaz on Monday. Baker is also facing firearm charges related to the incident and will appear in court again on Feb. 9 for a bail review hearing.
