By John Gibson, WNIN January 27, 2022 The Red Cross says winter weather is making its blood crisis even worse. In a release from the Southwest Indiana Chapter, the agency said hundreds of blood drives have been canceled across the country due to winter storms, forcing about 6,500 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected. As February approaches and the effects from the spread of the omicron variant and winter weather persist, the Red Cross is urging people to make an appointment to give blood or platelets. Appointments can be made via the Red Cross Blood Donor App, by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, or by calling 1-800-RED CROSS. The organization is offering an incentive: Anyone who gives blood or platelets during February will receive a $10 Amazon Gift Card via email. WNIN is the NPR/PBS affiliate in Evansville, Indiana.
