SOUTHAMPTON, NY — A longtime athletic director in Southampton has scored a prestigious award. Southampton School District Athletic Director Darren Phillips was recognized as the Suffolk Zone Physical Education Director of the Year by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance at a ceremony on Jan. 20, the district said. Phillips earned the designation after his district's physical education staff nominated him for the noteworthy title. "I am honored to receive this award and grateful to work with an amazing physical education staff," Phillips said. "They continually work to improve physical education every year by providing a quality program for our students that teaches and reinforces the importance of lifelong physical activity and good nutrition." He added: "This award is a testament to the growth and evolution of our physical education program over the past 20 years since I started at Southampton."
