Grammy award-winning jazz pianist Tal Cohen will be in town Sunday, February 6th to perform at The Royal Room, and is taking a detour to Jazz Night School for a special workshop before the show! This workshop shows you how to take your unique musical influences and incorporate them into your jazz improvisations. Material is presented through the lens of classical music and traditional Jewish folk songs. Israeli pianist Tal Cohen will discuss how his cultural influences diverge from jazz norms to help create new styles of improvisation and compositional forms. Specifically, Cohen will discuss how styles from classical music, traditional Jewish folk songs, and jazz can be blended to create and influence your own original improvisation. Cohen will demonstrate this and provide examples with composed etudes, spontaneously arranged jazz standards, and original composition.
