MINEOLA, NY — A quick-thinking grandmother from Long Island turned the tables on a suspected scammer, luring him into a trap set up by authorities. And the dramatic arrest was caught on her doorbell camera. It happened shortly before 12:30 p.m. on Thursday. According to Nassau County police, a 73-year-old Seaford woman was contacted by an unknown man who claimed to be her grandson. The caller said he was in jail and needed a lawyer. Some time later, the woman received a second phone call from a man claiming to be her grandson's lawyer who needed $8,000 to post his bail, police said. Then there was a third phone call. This time, the caller claimed to be the grandson's bail bondsman and said he was in the neighborhood to collect the cash. Suspecting this might be a scam, the woman contacted police. Eventually the man stopped by the woman's home. And when he took an envelope from her, police sprung out from hiding and arrested him. The man — later identified as Joshua Estrella Gomez, 28, of Mineola — has been charged with attempted grand larceny, according to police. NBC4 New York posted footage of the dramatic arrest on its website. You can find it by clicking here.
