GREENFIELD, WI — The Greenfield Health Department is now offering free Narcan and the training to use it at its City Hall office during regular business hours. People can learn how to recognize the signs of an overdose and how to administer Narcan to obtain two free doses of the drug from the Health Department, the city's website says. NARCAN® (Naloxone HCl) Nasal Spray is an FDA-approved nasal spray drug that can help in emergency treatment when someone is overdosing on opioids. In 2020, there were 1227 deaths associated with opioid overdose in Wisconsin, according to the Department of Health Services. In 2021, drug overdose deaths in Milwaukee County reached new records. At least 560 people died from drug overdoses, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, Naloxone, the drug in Narcan, can quickly restore normal breathing to a person if an opioid overdose has slowed or stopped it. "Families with loved ones who struggle with opioid addiction should have naloxone nearby; ask their family member to carry it; and let friends know where it is," the National Institute on Drug Abuse says online. How To Get Narcan And Training In Greenfield: "An overdose could happen at any time. Get the information you need. Be prepared. Save a life," the Health Department's outreach website about Narcan training reads. To get the training, visit the health department in room 104 of Greenfield City Hall, 7325 Forest Home Avenue Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Appointments can also be scheduled online.
