PRINCETON, NJ — COVID-19 hospitalizations have dipped slightly nationally, but experts warn that there is still a long way to go before the country reaches pre-omicron variant levels. Around 150,000 inpatient beds were being used for COVID-19 patients as of Jan. 25, which was a drop of more than 8,000 beds from the prior week, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Still, hospitals continue to be challenged by the large influx of COVID-19 patients. About 78 percent of inpatient beds were in use, and 21 percent of all inpatient beds were occupied by COVID-19 patients according to the HHS. More than 8 out of 10 intensive care unit beds were occupied, and about a third were occupied by COVID-19 patients. "There may be reason for cautious optimism," said Emily Pond, a research data analyst with the Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center. "The most recent case surge appears to have peaked, with nationwide case totals declining for the first time in over a month." State health officials in New Jersey reported to the federal government Jan. 25 that approximately 69 percent of inpatient beds and 49 percent of intensive care unit beds in hospitals across the state were occupied. Around 20 percent of inpatient beds and 22 percent of ICU beds statewide were filled by COVID-19 patients, they reported. The latest hospitalization numbers from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for Mercer County, included below, are from Jan. 14-20 and represent a rolling seven-day average. Note that the figures for occupied hospital beds sometimes exceed 100 percent; this is because more than one patient sometimes occupies a bed over the course of a week. Below are the latest figures for hospitals in Mercer County. Can't find the hospital you're looking for? Try searching for it here.
