CONCORD, NH — State officials said tourism during the summer and fall seasons broke records leading to stronger than expected tax revenues despite the pandemic continuing to have an impact on spending and vacation habits. A new report released on Tuesday shows spending in New Hampshire reached more than $2.1 billion for the first time in 2021. During the summer alone, 4.4 million people came to the state — a 21 percent increase. Overall, nearly $323 million in tax revenue was raised from close to 13 million people visiting the state in fiscal year 2021. "My hats off to this state's incredible tourism industry, going from recovery to record-breaking in one season like this," Taylor Caswell, the commissioner of NH Department of Business and Economic Affairs, said. "Our tourism team here at BEA kept a marketing presence in key states throughout the pandemic, so while other states retreated, we were poised to come out of the gate fast … and that worked. We have every reason to believe that people are coming back and loving what they can see and do here in New Hampshire for an experience of a lifetime." Gov. Chris Sununu thanked businesses for their work in making it such a great season for visitors and said he hoped this year would be even better. "Were it not for workforce shortages and supply chain issues, New Hampshire's hospitality businesses would have prospered even more during this summer's record-breaking season," Mike Somers, the CEO and president of the NH Lodging and Restaurant Association, added. The state, knowing competition was going to be fierce for vacation dollars, spent $2.4 million on marketing. That investment, officials said, helped bring in the increased state revenue. 'Windows To The Wild' Returns Season 17 of the popular program, "Windows to the Wild" with Willem Lange, returns on Feb. 2. There are five new episodes airing next month. The shows will also be available on NHPBS Passport on Feb. 1, to watch all at once. More shows will be launched in March. "We are proud to bring NHPBS viewers another season of inspired storytelling, filmed safely and effectively during pandemic conditions," Peter Frid, the president and CEO of NHPBS, said. "We know NHPBS viewers — like many New Englanders — are keen outdoor enthusiasts. The return of host Willem Lange and his crew with another season of wonder inspired by the wild is the perfect winter escape." The program topics include historic preservation, social justice and outdoor recreation, and paddling along the Saco River. For more information, visit the network's website.
