ORLAND PARK, IL — Lane closures will begin Thursday for a road modernization project that has been in design for the past few months, officials said. Lanes within the intersection at 143rd Street and John Humphrey Drive will be intermittently closed starting Jan. 27 and going until Jan. 28. In order to begin placing new traffic signals, lanes and a dry-land bridge, soil borings will be done on the northern side of 143rd Street. According to village officials, the road will never be completely shut down but traffic in the area may be increased while construction is taking place. The project will end with updated traffic signals, dual left-turn lanes going east and west and new right-turn lanes for north and southbound drivers. For walkers and other pedestrians, new walk signals and ADA compliant sidewalk ramps will be included. The most ambitious piece of the design, however, is the addition of a dry-land bridge to stop the eastern lane from sinking. Currently, the pavement on the eastern side of the intersection is uneven due to consistent driving. Officials told Patch they hope the improved mobility will allow more access to La Grange Road and the Orland Square Mall.
