Press release from the DBR Chamber of Commerce: January 25, 2022 NSYMCA Collecting Essential Pet Supplies for Local Shelters Volunteers needed for Pet Blanket Volunteer Event on February 27   Northbrook, IL: January 2022 – The North Suburban YMCA's Social Responsibility Committee is collecting essential pet supplies during January and February.  The supplies will be donated to three local animal shelters including Wright-Way Rescue, Orphans of the Storm Animal Shelter, and Heartland Animal Shelter.  Items may be dropped off at the Y's front desk located at 2705 Techny Rd. in Northbrook.    In addition, volunteers of all ages are invited to the Y on Sunday, February 27th from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. to help create fleece pet blankets to donate to the shelters.  The construction of the blankets require simple cutting and tying, with no sewing required. Space is limited and participants are asked to bring their own scissors and one yard of fleece.    "The community is encouraged to bring their pet item donations anytime between now and February 27, the day of the pet blanket making event," said Karen Brownlee, chair of the North Suburban YMCA's Social Responsibility Committee.  "One of the easiest ways to teach our children about kindness and empathy is to treat animals well. The pet blanket making event helps to nurture compassion towards animals while providing opportunities for family fun and togetherness."   Recommended donated pet items include: One yard pieces of fleece material Paper towels Bleach Cat litter Laundry detergent Mops, brooms, and buckets Trash and contractor bags Unopened pet food Office supplies (paper reams, pens, highlighters, etc.) Dog and cat toys Kongs and puzzle feeder toys Leashes, collars, and harnesses Royal Canin BabyCat Kitten Food   Social Responsibility is a core belief of the North Suburban YMCA. The Y's Social Responsibility Committee recently hosted a successful Blessing Bag Packing Day in December. Many of the volunteers were intergenerational families who came together to help local community members who are experiencing homelessness.
