Press release from the City of Raleigh: Jan 25, 2022 The Friends of the City of Raleigh Museum invite the public to explore your family history at the African American Genealogy symposium on February 12, 2022 from 10am-2:45pm.  This virtual symposium will feature researchers and scholars presenting on little known archival resources that help connect families through enslavement periods. Speakers include members of the Hunter family who successfully traced their roots to Dorothea Dix Park in the 18th century along with scholars, Dr. Loren Schweninger, discussing the Race and Slavery project at UNC-Greensboro, Dr. Freddie Parker, professor emeritus at NCCU, who will explore his expansive work on runaway advertisements; and Kara Deadmon, historian for the NC State Capitol, will discuss her research uncovering the African American connections to the Capitol. Additionally, the COR Museum will provide an opportunity for attendees to schedule times to talk with genealogical researchers to help begin their own family histories or seek help on research roadblocks. The event is free and open to the public.
