Press release from San Diego Unified School District: 01/25/2022 SAN DIEGO–State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond has recognized 31 schools around California for earning the new Purple Star designation, honoring their support for military-connected students. Of the 31 schools statewide, almost 30 percent are in San Diego Unified School District. Board President Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne praised the schools for their support of students with parents in the Armed Services. recognized According to the State Superintendent, the newly created California Purple Star School Designation Program recognizes schools that are "committed and equipped to meet the unique needs of military-connected students and their families." Purple Star schools seek to reduce the burdens on military-connected students and their families by providing support, creating transition programs, and offering staff professional development, he explained. "San Diego Unified has always been proud to serve those who protect our liberty by ensuring their children are well cared for when they are learning," said Dr. Whitehurst-Payne. "We understand their parents are fully focused on their mission to protect our country, and the best way San Diego Unified can support that mission is by giving their children a world-class education." San Diego Unified designated as Purple Star schools are: San Diego is home to one of the largest concentrations of military-connected students in the state. Some 8 percent of all students - close to 8,000 students - have a parent serving in the Armed Forces.
