Here are the top 3 stories in Grand Rapids today: Safe Haven Ministries extends its support and offerings to human trafficking survivors of all genders. Safe Haven, a Grand Rapids nonprofit that has offered crisis response services for people in need since 1999, received 2,715 crisis contacts and served 79 households in 2021. The group has expanded its services in honor of National Human Trafficking Prevention Month. (GR|MAG) The Grand Rapids City Commission unanimously votes to adopt a five-year parks strategic master plan. The plan will focus on equity-centered capital investment including but not limited to creating a connected network of parks and natural areas, recreation programs and amenities, and a push for overall sustainability. Implementation will begin as soon as this year and go through 2026. (Press Release Desk) Pulitzer Prize-winner Nikole Hannah-Jones will be speaking at Grand Rapids Community College. Hannah-Jones' work investigates racial inequality and injustice, including the creation of the 1619 Project, a major initiative from The New York Times that "reframes American history by considering what it would mean to regard 1619 as our nation's birth year." The virtual event will be held at 6:00 PM on Jan. 31 and is titled "Crossroads: Academic Freedom and (the) Ivory Tower".
