SOUTHAMPTON, NY —A Glen Cove man was arrested on Thursday after he rear-ended a school bus while intoxicated in Southampton, police said.
According to Southampton Village Police, at 7:51 p.m., Adonay Abrego-Vasquez, 36, was arrested on County Road 39 and charged with driving while intoxicated and second-degree aggravated unlicensed operations, both misdemeanors.
The crash involved a Montauk Bus Company bus and a 2015 Ford van driven by Abrego-Vasquez, officials said. Abrego-Vasquez ran into the back of the school bus while the bus was stopped at the railroad crossing gate on County Road 39, as required by New York State vehicle and traffic law, police said.
The bus had one passenger and neither the driver nor the passenger reported any injuries at the time of the crash, police said.
A passenger in the van was extracted from the vehicle by the Southampton Fire Department and airlifted by Suffolk County Police aviation to Stony Brook University Hospital for injuries sustained in the crash, police said.
Abrego-Vasquez was transported to Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released to the custody of Southampton Village Police for further processing, police said.
The van was impounded, police said.
