Description

Press release from the Historical Society of Western Virginia: January 24, 2022 Teetotalers & Moonshiners, a new poster exhibit at the History Museum, looks at the long-lasting effects of Prohibition on Virginia and America. This includes the movement as part of social reform and the economic and social costs of Prohibition, including the closing of businesses and conflict within communities. Illegal alcohol production and sales became an underground culture and economy. Displays address the role of government in overseeing public health, and prohibition's legacy, from NASCAR to the creation of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to the rise of the modern brewing and distilling industry. The exhibit consists of hanging panels displayed in the museum's Norfolk Gallery. It runs through early March. This press release was produced by the Historical Society of Western Virginia.
