RESTON, VA — Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the transfer of a portion of Edmund Halley Drive in Reston to the Secondary System of State Highways. The resolution was adopted unanimously during the board's regular Tuesday meeting. Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) requested the transfer of a section of the road to state control as part of the completion of Phase 2 of the Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project. The road will eventually allow access from Sunrise Valley Drive to the future Reston Town Center Metrorail Station. Prior to FCDOT's request, a number of improvements were made to the road. These included adding bike lanes, a trail and a sidewalk in order to meet the Fairfax County Comprehensive Plan requirements. In addition, the road was widened to bring it up to Virginia Department of Transportation standards for street acceptance. With the transfer, the state will now have unrestricted right-of-way with all of the necessary easements to make any needed cuts, fills and drainage. The transfer of Edmund Halley Drive was part of the proffer agreement the county approved as part of the Reston Crossing project. In June 2019, supervisors approved final Brookfield's development plan for the Halley Rise project along Edmund Halley Drive to the east. The development will include a 200-room hotel. The entire project will include 1.5 million square feet in new office space, 1,721 residential units and 380,000 square feet of retail space. The project will include the addition of an urban-style Wegmans grocery store. At its Dec. 8, 2021 meeting, the Fairfax County Planning Commission approved an amendment to JACO Acquisition's final development plan concerning another property in the development off of Sunrise Valley Drive. JACO proposes installing 480 dwelling units with up to 9,250 square feet of retail space to a parcel to the east of the hotel and grocery store.
