FREDERICKSBURG, VA — Local buses in Fredericksburg will go fare-free beginning on Monday, Feb. 28, the city announced on Monday. The fare-free program applies to all Fredericksburg Regional Transit routes. The free service is funded by a grant from the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation through the Transit Ridership Incentive Program. FRED transit is also receiving support from localities and other grants to eliminate fees on buses. "FRED is a valuable asset to the community and this funding award is a major step forward to improving public transportation access in the Greater Fredericksburg Region," Jamie Jackson, Director of Public Transit and Transportation, said in a news release. "This funding removes a barrier for all who use our public transit system; including those who rely on FRED for their daily transportation needs." Public transit officials said the fare-free service would increase ridership in the region, allowing riders to access school, work, and medical appointments. Fredericksburg Regional Transit serves the City of Fredericksburg, Stafford County, and Spotsylvania County. More information about the fare-free bus service will be posted on the FRED Transit website in the coming weeks.
