HARLEM, NY — A Baltimore man died after shooting two police officers in Harlem on Friday, killing both, according to the NYPD. Lashawn McNeil, 47, had been in critical condition at Harlem Hospital since Friday's shooting in his mother's apartment on West 135th Street. An NYPD spokesperson confirmed McNeil's death Monday afternoon. He was shot inside the home by a third officer after he allegedly opened fire, killing 22-year-old Jason Rivera and injuring 27-year-old Wilbert Mora, who died Tuesday. McNeil's mother called police to the apartment Friday evening during an argument with her son, who had come to New York from Baltimore to help her as she recovered from surgery, according to the New York Times. As police walked down a narrow hallway inside the apartment, a bedroom door swung open and McNeil opened fire, hitting Rivera and Mora, according to NYPD Chief of Detectives James Essig. A third officer then shot McNeil. McNeil's arrest record included only a drug conviction from nearly 20 years ago, as well as some out-of-state arrests, the Times reported. The gun was stolen from a security guard in Baltimore in 2017 who left it in a safe and came home to find her Glock 45 stolen, the New York Daily News reported. (NYPD via AP Photo) Rivera, a native of Inwood who had written passionately about his desire to improve police-community relations, will be laid to rest following a funeral and viewing Thursday and Friday at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Midtown. The other officer who was wounded died four days after the call to the Harlem apartment. After being shot, Mora was transferred to NYU Langone Medical Center on Sunday as doctors worked to keep him alive. He died Tuesday, according to Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell. "Wilbert is 3 times a hero," Commissioner Sewell said in a tweet Tuesday afternoon. "For choosing a life of service. For sacrificing his life to protect others.
