ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Assemblywoman Shanique Speight will chair the New Jersey Homeland Security and State Preparedness Committee for the 2022-2023 legislative session, Democratic leaders announced last week. Speight, who has a background in law enforcement, will lead the committee responsible for monitoring the protection of New Jersey residents and overseeing issues affecting counterterrorism, risk assessment, infrastructure protection, emergency communication, border security and cyber security. She represents Belleville and Newark in the state's 29th District. Speight, who has represented the district since 2018, will also join the Assembly Democrats' leadership team for the 220th session as deputy parliamentarian. "Whether in dealing with the pandemic, climate change, emergent threats of cyber-attacks or domestic terrorism, now, more than ever, we see the value of preparedness and the impact that statewide efforts can have on the lives of New Jersey residents," Speight said. "As chair, I look forward to strengthening our resiliency measures and ensuring that the state is ready for whatever challenges we face," Speight added.
