Be Aware: It's Coyote Mating Season In The East Bay

NEWPORT, RI — East Bay residents, be aware: coyote mating season has arrived. From the end of January to as late as early March, coyotes are more active, meaning they are more likely to come into contact with the public. The city of Newport urged all residents — not just those with pets — to be extra careful during mating season. That means keeping pets indoors, carrying a flashlight or making a noise when walking dogs in areas where coyotes are active and, most importantly, securing food sources. "Remember: As long as coyotes are well-fed, their populations will grow," the city said. "That's why it's critical that we all do our part to help keep food supplies low and learn to be mindful of these relatively new additions to our urban ecosystem." To make sure coyotes aren't treating your yard like a buffet, secure trash cans and dumpsters and only feed pets indoors. Coyotes have been a part of Aquidneck Island life for about 30 years, the city said, and populations have only risen since then.
