Phoenix Police Officer Shot On Duty In December, Leaves Hospital

PHOENIX, AZ —The Phoenix Police Department on Monday announced that Officer Tyler Moldovan, who was shot eight times while in the line of duty in December, has been released from St. Joseph's Hospital and transported to a local rehabilitation facility. At one point, Moldovan was on life support, according to the PPD. On the PPD's Facebook page, the Moldovan family thanked the community for its support and requested privacy at this time. The 22-year-old Moldovan was shot early on Dec. 14 near the intersection of 15th Avenue and Camelback Road in Phoenix as he investigated reports of vehicles driving erratically. Moldovan was rushed to St. Joseph's hospital. He suffered extensive neurologic injuries and was still on a ventilator nearly a month after the shooting, according to a written update from his wife Chelsea earlier this month. On Dec. 30, Essa Williams, 24, was charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, in addition to other charges, in connection with Moldovan's shooting. Moldovan had graduated from the police academy last March. Earlier this month, Chelsea Moldovan and the Moldovan family had thanked the staff at St. Joseph's Hospital, the police department and the community for their support. "The doctors, nurses, medical staff and those associated with the hospital have been nothing short of incredible," Chelsea Moldovan wrote. "The cards, letters, posts, blue ribbons and vigils that have been sent and carried out by our family, friends and the community have helped lift our spirits. I can't say enough about our Phoenix police family who have been unwavering in their care and concern. Most importantly, the prayers have been felt and are witnessed daily."
