Mary Anastasia O'Grady writes "The Americas," a weekly column on politics, economics and business in Latin America and Canada that appears every Monday in the Journal. Ms. O'Grady joined the paper in August 1995 and became a senior editorial page writer in December 1999. She was appointed an editorial board member in November 2005. She is also a member of the board of directors of the Indianapolis-based Liberty Fund. In 2012 Ms. O’Grady won the Walter Judd Freedom Award from The Fund for American Studies. In 2009 Ms. O'Grady received the Thomas Jefferson Award from The Association of Private Enterprise Education. In 2005 Ms. O'Grady won the Bastiat Prize for Journalism awarded by the International Policy Network for her articles on the World Bank, the underground economy in Brazil and the bad economic advice the U.S. often gives to Latin American countries. In 1997 Ms. O'Grady won the Inter American Press Association's Daily Gleaner Award for editorial commentary. Ms. O'Grady received a bachelor's degree in English from Assumption College and an M.B.A. in financial management from Pace University. Robert Lawson is a Clinical Professor and holds the Jerome M. Fullinwider Centennial Chair in Economic Freedom; he also is director of the Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom at the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Cox School of Business. He earned his PhD and MS in Economics from Florida State University and his BS in Economics from the Honors Tutorial College at Ohio University. He previously taught at Auburn University, Capital University, and Shawnee State University. Dr. Lawson is a founding co-author of the Fraser Institute's Economic Freedom of the World annual report, which presents an economic freedom index for over 160 countries. Lawson has authored or co-authored over 100 journal articles, book chapters, policy reports, and book reviews. With Benjamin Powell, he is co-author of the Amazon Bestseller, Socialism Sucks: Two Economists Drink Their Way Through the Unfree World (Regnery Publishing). Lawson's research has been cited over 10,000 times according to Google Scholar. Lawson is past-president of the Association of Private Enterprise Education, a Senior Fellow at the Fraser Institute, and a member of the Mont Pelerin Society. He has won the Adam Smith Award from the Association of Private Enterprise Education. Lawson is married to the talented choreographer and writer, Tracy Lawson, and has one daughter. In his spare time, he enjoys playing vintage base ball, hiking, running, cooking, working on his '68 VW bug, and watching sports of all kinds. He loves Cincinnati chili, the Bengals, and the Reds. April 20 at 6 PM | How Openness and Free Enterprise Created the Modern World: Johan Norberg of the Free To Choose Network and CATO Institute at the Plaster Center Collaboratorium with a food and drink reception before-hand. Johan Norberg is a senior fellow at the Cato Institute and a writer who focuses on globalization, entrepreneurship, and individual liberty. Norberg is the author and editor of several books exploring liberal themes, including Progress: Ten Reasons to Look Forward to the Future, named by The Economist as one of the best books of 2016; Financial Fiasco: How America’s Infatuation with Homeownership and Easy Money Created the Economic Crisis; and In Defense of Global Capitalism, originally published in Swedish in 2001 and since published in over 20 different countries. Norberg has also been the writer and host of numerous television documentaries on such subjects as globalization, India, energy, and Adam Smith. Many of them can be found at FreetoChoose.tv. Norberg’s articles and opinion pieces appear regularly in both Swedish and international newspapers, and he is a regular commentator and contributor on television and radio around the world discussing globalization and free trade. Prior to joining Cato, Norberg was head of political ideas at Timbro, a Swedish free‐market think tank, from 2003 to 2005. He then served as a senior fellow for the Brussels‐based Centre for a New Europe during 2006. Norberg received his master’s degree from Stockholm University in the history of ideas.
