Born in Virginia and raised up in the holy golden Northern California hills, McVey has come to understand music as a major thread that ties together community and an opportunity to practice magic in one of its most accessible & transmittable forms. Music has always been home and she genuinely hopes / time turns everything / into song. This show celebrates the release of Time Turns Everything, Mikayla’s first full-length LP and her second studio collaboration with producer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist, & deep space explorer James Wallace aka SKYWAY MAN. The album is a staggering work of heartache & healing that takes a spiraling & personal pass at answering a very old question: where does love go when it dies? And furthermore… can love ever die? It looks at the heart, the lover, and the process through a range of musical kaleidoscopes, and ultimately delivers a meditation on the power of time to transform pure grief into melody, poetry, vibration, and medicine for the future. Her songs have grown out of a childhood spent listening to old country cassettes and reading western novels at her grandpa’s cattle ranch, and have matured into the heartbreaking ballads and soulful anthems that are relevant in the present-day. Desiree pays tribute to the spirit of both the country and folk traditions, crafting music that is as vulnerable as it is strong-willed and fierce – she sings with the raw truth of the country greats, and the emotional depth of the often forgotten folk heroes. Her songwriting is intimate and nostalgic, her voice thick with heartache, and her music reminiscent of all the beautiful losers that have existed for the sake of the song. Alkanna Instagram Alkanna is the beatmaking project of DJ and multi-instrumentalist Patrick Murphy (Sitka Sun). Performing with a turntable, sampler, and instrument of choice (guitar, bass), Alkanna spins both his original material and deep vinyl selections. Keeping true to his love for improvisation, expect to hear interpretations of his existing compositions, reworked live and in response to the vibe of the space and people. Similar to Sitka Sun, Alkanna is rooted in international sound and deep meditative grooves, suitable as the soundtrack for a late night dance party or the perfect accompaniment to set the mood for an inspired, creative gathering.
