Description
A one day business workshop for operations that produce live edge slabs. The goal is to support profitable live edge slab businesses. This one day educational and networking workshop focuses on the business and operational skills needed to successfully operate a small sawmill business producing live edge slabs. We begin at 8 am for check in and offer coffee/donuts/fruit as snacks. Then at 9 am we begin to cover the business topics related to management of the business. Additional discussions cover products and marketing, sawing equipment, drying options, dry kiln equipment-solar, dehumidification, traditional hot water and steam kilns, and vacuum kilns. Additional topics involve how arborists may work in their businesses a live edge sawmill operation, sourcing logs in rural and urban areas, marketing directly and on the wholesale level, the equipment needed to flatten slabs and epoxy fillers. We will discuss as examples successful profiles of live edge slab businesses. On site at the Wood Technology Center sawmill at SUNY Morrisville campus in Morrisville, NY, we will review their band sawmill and traditional dry kiln and have a demo sawing live edge slabs. At noon we break for lunch that is provided in the registration fee. We end the workshop at 4 pm. Included in the workshop is a Business Guide for Live Edge Slab Operations. Note that we discourage children from attending as we don't have free attendance for children of attendees. In the order form we ask if attendees have special diet and mobility needs. The site is on the south side of the NY Thruway/I-90 in Central New York with hotels available in the nearby communities along major highways, including Syracuse, Rome and Utica. Note the above photo shows a live edge demo at a site that processes urban logs into live edge slabs using a chainbar sawmill. The Wood Products Extension Department at North Carolina State University supports the wood products industry in North Carolina and beyond. It is our mission to provide support to the wood products industry as an outreach service of NCSU and the Cooperative Extension Service.
