Born in Chicago Illinois, She is known for her powerful vocals, captivating stage presence, and songwriting. Vocalist Deb Ryder matches her unquestionable blues-mama bona fides with some of the smartest lyric sets dropped in the genre this year! DUANE VERH - ROOTS MUSIC REPORT She began singing at the age of five joining her Dad, crooner Al Swanson on stage at several popular venues and churches in the Chicago area. Deb's musical career began in her early teens when her mother moved the family to California and along with her stepfather, opened the renowned Rock and Blues club the Topanga Corral. There she opened for and performed with such legends as Etta James, Big Joe Turner, Taj Mahal. and Canned Heat, all regulars at the club. These artists mentored Ryder, and it was then that her vision of herself as a singer, songwriter and performer began to take shape. Neighbor Bob Hite of Canned Heat took Deb under his wing and carefully selected records from his vast collection to school her in blues music. Miss Etta James who regularly stayed at the house, took time working with Ryder on her vocals and songwriting telling her one day You got it, now you're singing and writing the blues! These affirmations from her mentors set Deb firmly on her musical path. Ryder enjoyed a professional career performing on numerous national television commercials, motion pictures, and Las Vegas musicals, and had a very successful run as a session artist in L.A. Her first record Might Just Get Lucky, recorded and produced by Deb and husband, bassist Ric Ryder was released in 2014 on BEJEB MUSIC and put her on the blues radar! She then teamed up with Grammy award winning producer / drummer Tony Braunagel, and released three critically acclaimed, chart topping records, Let It Rain, Grit Grease & Tears, and Enjoy The Ride from 2015 - 2018. With her signature arrangements and impeccable songwriting, you can expect her to continue to imprint her indelible mark on the blues world, now and in the future. "Her vocal ability puts her among those great female blues singers that preceded her. There is no reason why she shouldn't ascend to the higher ranks of the blues elite!" OJATA is quickly becoming a go-to band because of the high energy and passion they display while performing. Roots and Blues are their lifeblood, and it shows in their ever-popular originals; and the few selective covers, they bring to every show. It is the band's goal to captivate the audience from the first note struck until the last chord is played while entertaining them both musically and visually. OJATA simply put, is a very unique band. Unique in that they express themselves in such a way; that’s so different, that many have said after seeing them perform live, they’ve never seen nor heard anyone like them before. And not only do they capture the traditional fans of the blues; which they so love and cherish, but also have been gaining more and more of a younger audience due to the Roots style of music they showcase everywhere they’ve been honored to play. When you see and hear OJATA you will be taken on a journey through the ups and downs, the twists and turns, peaks and valleys of the vibrancy of love and everyday living through their music. They are a rare breed full of spirit and charisma, and they put on a show that is both energetic and captivating with a tight sound like no other. Frontman Jon English can be moving, emotional, heartfelt and intense at one point, and then soothing, soulful, lustful and desiring at another point in both his body language, lyrics, and vocals.Add to Jon’s performance the journeymen experiences of Bruce Krupnik and newcomer Brett Cox; with their flowing, rhythmic, harmonious blend of guitar string manipulations that invites your soul on a cosmic colorful expedition to places you might’ve never been before, the rhythm section of Ray Sadolsky; with his steady uplifting, driving, both subtle and powerful, bass playing that takes your heartbeat on a vast rousing journey, and Jason Blakely; with his energetic, captivating, influential dynamics of the drums and you have The Abandoned. Orphan Jon and The Abandoned is a band that totally captures the essence of what Americana Music is all about; hard work, rough life, grinding days, moving souls, touching hearts and heartfelt love, day-to-day, and all the time.
