MILFORD, MA — With a lot of cold, snowy winter weather yet to come, Milford's cold weather homeless shelter will hold its final training session of 2022 this weekend. The Pathway to a Better Life shelter at St. Mary's Church typically opens when the temperature feels lower than about 20 degrees. The overnight shelter relies on local volunteers to stay at the shelter while it's open. The shelter began serving local homeless residents in 2019. Over the pandemic, the homeless population has increased in Worcester County, and shelter space has been even more limited due to health and safety restrictions. The shelter has been open during recent cold snaps, according to Pathway to a Better Life founder and Milford dispatcher Lisa Trusas. This week, temperatures may drop to near zero by Wednesday, and there's a snowstorm may be on tap for the upcoming weekend. The upcoming training session will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's. If you want to join, contact Trusas at (508) 922-9032 or email [email protected].
