Explore with Lindsay Root this remarkable black woman’s life & why Howard University’s Fine Arts Building is named after this Howell legend Join us at the Howell Opera House for a journey back in time to the late 1800's through the early 1900's and learn about this incredibly talented, remarkably strong pioneer in music, Lulu Vere Childers and her connection to our community. Born in Dry Ridge, Kentucky in 1870, she graduated from the Oberlin Conservatory in 1896, and in 1905 joined the faculty of Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she is accredited with initiating the Conservatory of Music in 1913 and School of Music in 1918. Your ticket to this event includes a New Orleans catered lunch featuring creole chicken, gumbo, blackened catfish, BBQ sausage and red beans & rice. To top it off, this incredible meal is accompanied by an intriguing afternoon with freelance content producer, Lindsay Root. Lindsay Root was born and raised in Howell, Michigan. He went to Central Michigan University, majoring in TV & Film. Upon graduation, he promptly headed West for work at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. He ultimately stayed 18 years in Hollywood, taking on a variety of freelance film production work. As an editor or cameraman, Lindsay gravitated toward feature films, and later documentary style programs. In 1989, travel and adventure sent Lindsay on a one year trek around the world that profoundly influenced his life – and he can’t wait to do it again. Returning to Howell to be a family caregiver in the early 2000’s, Lindsay started producing video stories with local Livingston County appeal. Discovering his grandparents met on a first date at the Howell Opera House in 1908, he became immersed in the historic building. It was this personal family connection that has created a constant drive and passion to research every aspect of Opera House. Mining its history has unearthed rich stories that give a fascinating perspective of Howell.
