ATLANTA, GA — Investigators are looking into an officer-involved shooting that left a man dead after he was said to have broken into a Fulton County Sheriff's deputy's home, authorities said. The deputy was returning home from work when he was notified by his Ring security camera that a man was breaking into his southeast Atlanta home, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. The deputy, who was still in uniform but driving his personal car, saw the man from the Ring video walking away from the home with tools and a number of other stolen items, according to the GBI. Investigators said the deputy followed the man in his car as the man walked, and the lawman eventually confronted the man in a wooded area just off the road. During the altercation, the deputy shot the man. Atlanta police were called and arrived to find the deputy performing CPR on the man. The man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital where he later died, authorities said. "The GBI has been asked to investigate the officer-involved shooting and the Atlanta Police Department is investigating the incident leading up to the shooting," a statement from the Fulton County Sheriff's Office said. GBI investigators were assigned to the case and found that the deputy's back door had been kicked open, and items found at the scene were taken from the deputy's house, authorities said. Authorities have not identified the man who was killed pending notification of his family, the GBI said.
