Terrible Ideas… Don’t You Just Love Those? Kristi Austin, Birmingham native, is currently a freelance graphic designer, an after-school elementary art teacher, an AAF member, and typically not a public speaker (in her words). Long ago when she had no idea what to study in college, her parents encouraged her to be an artist. “You have a gift,” they said (or were they just crossing their fingers she would graduate?). After all, many artists came before her on her father’s side of the family. He was a dentist and carving teeth is sort of an art, right? Kristi has worked as a designer since the week she graduated (yes, she did graduate) from college. Her career spans from working at a hospital, a printing company, an advertising agency, an in-house marketing department and a wholesale hardware company. Not one job was a terrible idea because each of them taught her so much. Kristi has also been stubbornly positive. She chronicled her four+ year journey of caring for her parents, who both suffered from Alzheimer’s. In the future, she is set to appear in a documentary called Wine, Women and Dementia, an independent film about amazingly positive female caregivers. She also was the top fundraiser in her local Alzheimer’s walk before her caregiving got serious! So is she a writer, a fundraiser and an actress? She has no idea, but none of those would be terrible!
