Description
Want to play some jazz standards? We are a drummer and a bassist who have played together for a good while in more of a funky instrumental rock mode, and we decided to buckle down and get our jazz chops together. So a few months ago we started inviting a rotating cast of musicians to join us in working through the Real Book and similar material. Lots of cool people have come through, but so far just one (sax and bass clarinet) has become a regular with us.
We’re mainly looking for additional melodic and chordal instruments. Keys or mallets would be awesome! Horns and reeds very welcome. Guitar, well… let’s just say we’ll be holding you to a higher standard than other instruments, we’ve had too many of you who didn’t understand the assignment. We don’t need another traps drummer, but Latin percussion would be cool. If you play an uncommon instrument like steel drum or ukulele, step right up, don’t be shy! All we ask is that you meet us on the common ground of jazz standards.
All skill levels are welcome! Just be familiar or comfortable with the types of tunes and styles in the Real Book, from bop to bossa. Ideally you’ll have your own copy, or charts of a variety of standards, and be able to read, or at least follow when someone tells you the chord progressions. Occasionally we play free jazz just to get the juices flowing.
We meet once a week, usually on Sundays, usually mid-day or early afternoon, in my basement in the NE Alberta neighborhood. You MUST be fully vaccinated!!! We do our best to keep some distance too. Come and jam!
