Sailing Captain

Jobs

Newport RI

Description

Hi My company, Sightsailing of Newport (www.sightsailing.com) is looking for a licensed captain to share captaining responsibilities and sail Aquidneck, our 80' schooner this season. Aquidneck is USCG certified for 49 guests, sails from May-October and offers 4-5 sailing cruises daily. Public Sails combine sailing with leisurely sightseeing with crew pointing out various Newport sights as we cruise by. We take a lot of pride in sailing the boat well and giving guests a nice experience. We like to think of ourselves as being in the sailing business as well as the hospitality business. Sightsailing operates three sailboats including a 34 foot sloop, a 46 foot sloop and Aquidneck. Responsibilities include working with the crew in the morning and helping get the boat ready to sail, backing out of a narrow slip on Bowen's Wharf, monitoring wind, tide and current and taking pride in covering as much ground as possible, chit chatting with guests and being pleasant. Aquidneck is big, full keeled and heavy but if you pay attention to sail trim and tide she sails well. Qualifications: You should be an excellent sailor with excellent large sailboat handling skills. We will train you in docking and operations but you should have experience on similarly sized vessels. You need a USCG Master's License with AUX Sail endorsement, 50 ton minimum. You need a lot of energy and stamina as our days at the peak of the season are almost 12 hours long. Lastly you should be role model of optimism with a positive attitude and friendly disposition. If this sounds interesting to you, visit Sightsailing.com and click on Employment (upper right under staff), and fill out an online captain application. If you have a resume, you can skip the work section of the application and email us your resume. Contact info is on website. Feel free to email us any questions. Sightsailing has been operating for 32 years from historic Bowen's Wharf and we offer some of the best seasonal sailing jobs around! If you feel that you have some experience and are interested but don't feel experienced enough to captain, consider being a crew or look at our smaller vessels! Crew job descriptions and applications are also on our website. Thanks!
