Puccini’s tragic, one-act opera, Suor Angelica is set in 17th-century Italy & Puccini’s only comic opera, Gianni Schicchi. Puccini’s tragic, one-act opera, Suor Angelica is set in 17th-century Italy. Because of her out-of-wedlock pregnancy, Suor (Sister) Angelica has been sent to a convent. Each year she waits to hear from her wealthy, noble family. Finally, seven years later, her aunt, a princess comes to the convent, but only to get her to renounce her claim to her inheritance. Angelica replies that she cannot forget her son, but her aunt tells her that her son is now dead. In the final scene, however, she is, through death, reunited with her son in heaven. (Duration: 1 hour) Following the moving and dramatic Suor Angelica we will perform our updated production of Puccini’s only comic opera, Gianni Schicchi. However, our version is set in 20th-century Mississippi and is sung in English! In 1992, the wealthy Rosco McNutty is lying dead in his bed. His relatives have gathered around him to mourn his passing. However, what they are really interested in is learning the contents of his will. All of them panic when they realize that he has cut them out! In order to come up with a scheme they enlist the help of a notorious local rogue – Gianni Schicchi (AKA Johnny Skeeky). This hilarious comic opera begins with a death but ends in comedy! (Duration: 1 hour)   SUMMER • 2021!
