Learn how to manage common injuries and illnesses when definitive medical care is an hour or more away. Successful completion of this course and written test results in a Wilderness First Aid (Standard) certification which complies with the Wilderness First Aid requirements for Scouts BSA High Adventure Camps including Philmont Scout Ranch, Sea Base and Northern Tier which require at least one person per trek (two per trek at Philmont Scout Ranch) to be current in WFA through one of the BSA’s approved providers. Having more participants trained in WFA skills is highly recommended for any high adventure or backcountry experience. Participants will learn and demonstrate patient assessment, how to provide effective first aid treatments for common outdoor injuries and illnesses such as bleeding control (STOP THE BLEED®,) assembling and maintaining trip specific first aid kits, and how to make appropriate evacuation decisions. Instruction will take place both in the classroom and outdoors regardless of the weather, so be prepared for any condition. Bring your upcoming trip gear (as much as possible) including water (leave water bladders home,) snacks, clothing, rain gear, first aid kit, etc. Wear comfortable, weather appropriate clothing; you will be practicing skills that require working on your hands and knees, bending, standing, lifting, and carrying. Participants must be 16 years of age or older and provide proof of a current Scouts BSA approved CPR/AED certification. The optional CPR/AED class and certification will be held the Friday night prior at an additional cost.
