Description

NEW ROCHELLE, NY — Despite the frigid temperatures, the New Rochelle Parks and Recreation Department issued a warning on Friday reminding winter sports enthusiasts that thin ice means no skating. "It's been cold, but not cold enough to freeze the ice on our ponds and lakes to a depth that is safe for skating," the alert dated Jan. 21. warned. "We will change the signage if and when conditions permit. Until then, please stay off the ice." In January, 2018, a 59-year-old suffered from hypothermia after falling through the ice by Five Islands Park in New Rochelle. The man stepped off the dock and the ice underneath him broke. Four members of the New Rochelle Police Department were able to get the man out of the water because he could pull himself up.
