Those Annual Property Tax Relief Checks Have Been Discontinued

If your local school district kept within their tax cap budget limits,  local homeowners were receiving a bonus check in the mail during the fall.  Commack homeowners received $875 checks in 2019, the last year of the program.  According to the Albany Times -Herald record, the program cost New York state 1.2 billion dollars each year contributing to a six billion dollar 2020 NY budget deficit. The following notation is included on the NY Dept of Taxation website; "The property tax relief credit has expired. Eligible homeowners received property tax relief checks in 2017, 2018, and 2019. However, by law, the program expired after 2019." Updated: September 01, 2021 However, Governor Hochul has proposed reinstating it as part of the 2022 budget.
