Founded in 1976 by Harris Strong and Elizabeth “Betty” Beatty, two friends mad for Gilbert & Sullivan, the society has produced fully staged productions since it’s inception. The society was originally founded as the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Hancock County, later changed to the G&S Society of Maine to include performances and performers from beyond the county. Following the renovation of the Grand Auditorium by another Harris Strong organization, Hancock County Auditorium Associates, the Gilbert and Sullivan Society decided to produce their first performance in that location. The new company performed The Gondoliers in early 1977. That show became the first in an uninterrupted series of full-on productions spanning more than four decades. Winter Harbor Music Festival is a two-week chamber music and vocal workshop located on the Schoodic Peninsula featuring world-class musicians and talented students and amateurs performing together.
