PEARL RIVER, NY — After a report of two men impersonating O&R workers going door-to-door in Stony Point, officials at Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. urged customers to confirm that anyone presenting themselves as an O&R contractor at their front door is not a fake. Ask to see a company identification card, they said. The customer reported on social media that two people who were going door-to-door around 7 p.m. came to her house saying they wanted to alert her to "government credits about to expire," presumably on solar energy purchases, O&R officials said. The customer referred to them as O&R reps because, she said, they told her they "worked with O&R to lower costs." Under no circumstances should customers permit access to their homes before confirming a person's identity and their affiliation with O&R, company officials said. For example, many energy services companies and solar marketers solicit business door-to-door and describe themselves as "working for O&R" or "working with O&R" because they work in related, and even complimentary, fields. But, except in rare instances, they are not employed by O&R either directly or on a contract basis. All O&R employees and contractors are required to carry color photo I.D. cards during their workday. If a person comes to your door claiming to be an O&R employee or contractor, ask to see the card. If you still are not satisfied about the person's identity, call O&R at 1-877-434-4100. If individuals representing themselves as O&R employees or contractors cannot produce a legitimate photo I.D. card, terminate further contact with them, lock your door and call the police.
