CONCORD, NH — More than a dozen governors across the country are requesting federal officials to offer flexibility when it comes to infrastructure dollars being spent in their states. The issue was raised by Gov. Chris Sununu and 15 other governors, mostly from rural states, to President Joe Biden on Wednesday in a letter about Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act requested the federal government work with the states as partners. The governors fear over-regulation of the federal dollars would be an "oversight nightmare" that could harm states that are growing. The governors also requested a limit to red tape and the pushing of "social agendas" instead of "economically sound" principles. "It is critical that your administration consider how simplicity, flexibility, and finality will drastically improve states' ability to develop and implement plans," the letter stated. "Excessive consideration of equity, union memberships, or climate as lenses to view suitable projects would be counterproductive." Highway widening projects, being limited by the Federal Highway Administration, were a specific example cited by the governors. The ban, they said, offered an "anti-growth mindset" and should not be part of transportation policy. The governors also said workforce shortages, supply chain problems, inflation, and other issues required the federal government to limit unnecessary restrictions and regulations that could hamper the combined efforts of both the federal and state governments. The letter can be read here. Lights, Life And Memories Raises $65K New Hampshire's largest home health and hospice provider in New Hampshire raised more than $65,000 during its annual Lights, Life And Memories Campaign. Granite VNA, formerly Concord Regional VNA and Central NH VNA & Hospice, honored more than 1,800 people online and 600 on porcelain doves placed on trees in Alton, Concord, Meredith, Wakefield, and Wolfeboro, as part of the event. "We deeply appreciate the overwhelming participation and support of hospice care from our community members and businesses," Beth Slepian, the president and CEO of Granite VNA, said. "Adding a name to the Honor Roll and/or a porcelain dove is a touching tribute to a loved one who has passed. Each year, we care for hundreds of patients on hospice and their families, and community support is vital to helping us continue this important work." More than 150 businesses in Concord and the capital region also displayed lights. A prerecorded remembrance is available to watch online if you missed it last year. Live Help Can Assist The New Hampshire Department of Education, along with a number of other states, is partnering with a free online service to help teenagers with math. Live Help, launched by Schoolhouse.world and Sal Kahn, the founder of Khan Academy, offers assistance via one-on-one peer tutors in Zoom rooms between 8 and 10 p.m. each weekday. Students 13 or older, who might need help, will be matched with others in individualized sessions. Each tutor is certified through Schoolhouse and specializes in algebra, geometry, calculus, and other mathematics. They can also assist with SAT prep. "One of our most requested features has been for one-on-one help — in real-time," Drew Bent, the co-founder and COO of Schoolhouse.world, said. "Students can show up during the two-hour time frame, join a queue and receive live help in about two or three minutes. Students in many cases often need help with a math problem immediately, especially if they have an exam or homework due the next day. This is a great resource, and tutors are carefully trained not to provide answers, but rather to guide students in the problem-solving process." Frank Edleblut, the commissioner of the department, called Live Help "a great resource" for students, with support delivering "big benefits for students" in the state.
