BERKELEY, CA — A juvenile who brought a replica firearm onto the Berkeley High School campus Wednesday was arrested, police said.
The 15-year-old boy, who does not attend BHS, was arrested was arrested on suspicion of brandishing a replica firearm and having a weapon on campus, police said.
Officers at around 11:55 a.m. responded to a report of a fight in downtown Berkeley involving BHS students, and they learned that two of the students had threatened others with a handgun during the incident, police said.
The School Resource Officer identified the two students who reportedly had the gun, and BHS staff alerted authorities when the two students arrived on campus, police said.
When the students noticed the officers on campus, they tried to run away, police said.
"Officers chased after both students as they ran into the C-Building and then back out of the building toward Milvia Street and Kittredge Street," police said in a statement.
"Officers were able to eventually detain both students in the area of Shattuck Avenue and Allston Way."
Officers found a BB gun in one of the student's backpacks.
"On first glance, officers thought the weapon was an actual firearm because the BB gun had a steel slide and polymer frame—with all the visible markings of a real handgun (make, model, serial number, weight, etc)," police said.
