Here are the top three stories today in Anchorage: An Idaho man has been charged in the cold-case killing of an Anchorage taxi driver in 1985. DNA testing led police to 56-year-old Eric Lane Jones in connection with Jawed Ahmed's death. Jones initially denied any involvement but soon confessed to shooting and killing Ahmed. (Anchorage Daily News) According to the Anchorage School Board, many kindergartners, first-graders, and second-graders in Anchorage are struggling to catch up on their pre-pandemic reading skills. About half of these students were in the bottom half of the benchmark. Education officials believe that the children are having difficulties because of the virtual school year from 2020 to 2021. (Alaska Public Media News) The initiative to recall Jamie Allard from Anchorage Assembly failed to gather enough signatures. The effort to remove Allard came from the claim that the Assembly members failed to properly perform official duties when participating in a meeting attended by more than 15 people, a limit proscribed by COVID-19 emergency measures at the time.
